Excel函数应用教程:函数与公式的概念

What is a function?

An Excel function is a special formula that is predefined to perform tasks such as calculations, analysis, and data processing. Take the commonly used SUM function as an example, its syntax is "SUM(number1,number2,......)". Here, "SUM" is the function name, each function has a unique name that determines its function and purpose. The function name is followed by a left parenthesis, then the contents separated by commas called parameters, and finally, a right parenthesis to indicate the end of the function.

Parameters are the most complex part of a function, they specify the objects, order, or structure of the function's operation. This allows users to process a specific cell or range, such as analyzing deposit interest, determining grade rankings, calculating trigonometric function values, and more.

Based on their source, Excel functions can be classified into two categories: built-in functions and add-in functions. The former can be used by users as soon as Excel is started, while the latter must be loaded by clicking on the "Tools -> Load Add-ins" menu command before they can be used like built-in functions.

What is a formula?

Functions and formulas are both different and related to each other. If the former is a special formula predefined by Excel, the latter is a calculation expression designed by users to compute and process worksheets.

Using the formula "=SUM(E1:H1)*A1+26" as an example, it starts with an equal sign "=", and can include functions, references, operators, and constants. In the above formula, "SUM(E1:H1)" is a function, "A1" is a reference to cell A1 (using the data stored within it), "26" is a constant, "*" and "+" are arithmetic operators (along with comparison, text, and reference operators).

If a function is to appear in the form of a formula, it must have two components: an equal sign before the function name and the function itself.
